Historically, organizations and individuals have built walls and moats around their data and tried to keep it locked away to maintain security and compliance while giving up the potential value of that data if shared and analyzed. This hurts organizational effectiveness and did not help security as demonstrated by many significant data breaches. Today trends like zero-trust enhanced with data-level protection allow for granular security and access control that can defend against criminals while also allowing data to travel and be used.
